Roman Shades

Roman Shades

Roman shades have been a popular window treatment since Roman times for a good reason. They are incredibly stylish and versatile and can be made to accommodate nearly any room in your home. At Rachel Brosky Interiors, we believe shopping for window treatments should be fun. We carry the full line of Hunter Douglas Window Treatments and would love to assist you in designing the perfect Roman blinds for your home.

Modern Style & Timeless Appeal

When you think of Roman shades, there are a couple styles that likely come right to mind. The hobbled, or full fold, the style features full loops of fabric down the length of the shade. This variety is the most frequently used in formal settings and does require some dressing when raised or lowered. The flat fold style is more contemporary and is one solid piece of fabric. Its straight style makes it an ideal choice for large patterns.

Vignette® Modern Roman Shades from Hunter Douglas are available in both flat and full fold styles and do not have exposed rear cords. This improves the aesthetics of the window and enhances safety for young children and pets.

Vignette® shades are available in a variety of opacities, including sheer, light-filtering, and room-darkening. Combine your favored opacity with a visually interesting texture like linen or tweed to make the shade your own. You can also elevate the look of your windows by choosing a fabric from the exclusive suite of products in the Alustra® Collection. This design-inspired selection of fabrics, textures, and hardware is meant to exceed the expectations of leading designers and discerning consumers. The collection features subtle metallic hints in both fabrics and hardware to mimic the finish of today's most high-end fixtures.

Light Control

The solid nature of Roman blinds removes your option for variable light control, but the solid fabric also means there are no gaps to let the light leak in when it is unwanted. Vignette® Modern Roman Shades are available with Duolite, another Hunter Douglas innovation. This feature combines a light-filtering sheer and a room-darkening opaque liner on a single roller to allow light when you want it, and privacy when you need it.

Softness & Character

There’s something about Roman shades that add character to a room that is unmatched by other window treatments. They can be masculine and tailored, or add a soft, feminine touch to a room with a lot of dark wood and sharp angles. A Roman blind is also an ideal accent for a small window. They have no stack back and, with an inside mount, require no additional room outside the window frame itself.

Choosing Your Fabric

There is literally no end to the options of fabric for Roman shades. A flat fold shade made from luxurious fabric with an eye-catching pattern can double as a piece of art. The general rule for fabric color is that darker shades make rooms appear smaller, while lighter shades have the opposite visual effect. However, there is something to be said for the lovely contrast of light-colored walls paired with the perfect darker shade of fabric.

Also, consider the room where the blinds will be hung when choosing fabric. A very bold and vibrant pattern may not be the best choice for a room that is meant to be calming, like a bedroom. Vertical stripes are great for a more masculine room and elongate a shorter window. A botanical print can brighten a room, and make it feel airier and more spacious, and intriguing textures can add depth to a monochromatic color scheme.

In addition to the color, texture, and pattern the actual material of the fabric is an essential component when making your decision. You will want to consider things such as the weight of the fabric and its light-blocking capacity. Also important is the durability of the fabric, especially if the shade will be in a child’s room or a high-traffic area of your home.

  • Cotton: A very versatile fabric. It can be used in both traditional and modern styles.
  • Silk: Silk is incredibly luxurious and adds sophistication and elegance to rooms. It is especially suited to formal rooms.
  • Linen: The natural fibers that make up this fabric lend an air of casual relaxation to your room.

Adding thermal or other fabric linings can enhance the shape of your shade, as well as provide additional room-darkening and insulation. To get the most light control and insulation benefit, it is best to mount your Roman blinds outside the frame, if possible.
