Layering Hunter Douglas Window Treatments near Elizabethtown, KY

Rachel Brosky Interiors • December 26, 2022

We can all agree that window treatments are necessary for their function, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be attractive and fun. Most people use a single window covering, such as shades or blinds, but using two or more coverings on a single window is a design technique known as layering. Layering your window treatments elevates the style of a room and provides visual interest and texture. The design team at Rachel Brosky Interiors is sharing our favorite tips to layer window treatments like a pro.

Consider Fashion AND Function

To create a layered look you will love, you need to decide what you need your window coverings to do. Will you need privacy and room-darkening power in a bedroom, or will your window treatments be used in an area where daytime privacy is more important? It will be easier to narrow down your choices once you know the function your shades will serve.

In the Spotlight

There are seemingly endless ways to layer your window dressings, but one of our favorite ways is to have one steal the spotlight while the other blends more into the room's background.

You should also take the decor of the rest of the room into account when choosing your drapes and shades. Do you want your windows to be the room's focal point, or would you rather that distinction go to a vibrant area rug or patterned wallpaper? If you want your window treatments to play a supporting role in the overall aesthetic, layers are still an option; just go with tone-on-tone hues so your windows aren’t as prominent. You can also use neutral colors at the window but take advantage of the opportunity to create texture with woven wood shades.

Go High and Low

Do you love the idea of layered window treatments but not the cost of doubling up on shades or blinds? You can solve this situation by indulging in the price of one covering and being more budget-conscious on the other. If you want to use luxe fabric for your drapery, consider a more cost-effective material, such as a cotton blend, for the accompanying shade.

Hang Both Properly

It’s tricky to have two treatments mounted inside the window frame, so ensure the windows you choose for layering have the space necessary to hang both treatments properly. Drapes look their best when hung higher than the window frame and extend several inches on either side. If you lack the space needed for a drapery stack back, try Hunter Douglas shades that offer the Duolite® feature. Duolite® allows you to have a sheer front shade and opaque liner on the same roller. Another great option is the two-on-one shade option available with Vignette® Modern Roman Shades, which allows you to mix and match any two fabrics.
