Often, side drapes are used with a traversing center panel to increase the functionality of the window coverings. This is a great way to enjoy the aesthetic of side drapes and the light control of standard drapery, but you need a top treatment to avoid risking your window treatments looking disjointed. If this is the case for you, we suggest tying the multiple panels together with a top treatment. A valance or cornice will make the separate panels appear as though they are one continuous window covering, lending an upscale finishing touch.

Cover Sidelights

Sidelights near front doors are an attractive addition and a great way to let natural light into your home's entryway. You will need to measure the window's width, height, and depth.
Measure across the window at the top, middle, and bottom, and use the smallest number for the width.
Use the same process for height, except measure from top to bottom at the window's left, center, and right sides.
The depth is the space between the window pane and the window's edge. It's important to ensure the depth of your window can accommodate the hardware of the blinds you choose.
Measure at least twice to ensure you have the most accurate number.
Always measure to the nearest 1/8th of an inch.

So you’ve decided to upgrade the way you cover your windows and look into custom Hunter Douglas window treatments. The style and function of custom window coverings is a significant upgrade to big box store window treatments. You can choose the style, colors, and material to create shades or blinds that are a perfect fit. That is, if they fit perfectly. The experts at Rachel Brosky Interiors have gathered some tips to make measuring for your new window treatments easy.

First Things First

Make sure you’re using a steel measuring tape for better accurace because a flimsy cloth tape won’t do you any favors while you’re trying to measure. Next, decide if you want an inside or outside mount for your blinds or shades. Most window coverings can use either mount, so it ultimately boils down to preference and available mounting depth.

Inside or Outside?

As the name suggests, an inside mount places your shades or blinds within the window frame. Your window coverings stay flush with the walls for a clean, polished appearance. The only real barrier to this mount type is insufficient mounting depth, but you can measure that, too. The depth must be enough to accommodate the necessary hardware. Inside mounted shades also provide some insulation because less unwanted air can move around the edges of the window covering.

Outside mounted blinds are installed beyond the edges of the frame, usually on the walls, molding, or ceiling. An outside mount is more versatile because you can extend the edges of your drapes, shades, or blinds several inches beyond the window. This can make your windows and room appear larger. You can also use this mount to hide unattractive molding or any architectural mishaps that haven’t been addressed yet. The only requirement is at least two inches of flat space above the window for proper placement of mounting brackets.

Bust Out the Measuring Tape

Once you know what mount you’re measuring for, grab your measuring tape and get to it. The measuring process is quite different depending on the mount you’re using.

For an inside mount, you need to measure the window's width at the top, middle, and bottom. Use the smallest number and round down to the nearest ⅛”. Measure your window’s height at the left, middle, and right. Go with the smallest measurement and round down to the nearest ⅛”. Why do you need three measurements? Much like the saying “Measure twice, cut once.”, taking three measurements will account for any user error and minor differences in the size of the window.

Outside mounts require you to measure the space you would like to cover. Start with the center width and add at least three inches to either side to eliminate any bothersome light gaps. Next up is the center height. Make sure to include any extra overlap and remember that shades with different sizes may have minor variations. Keep this in mind if you’re going for a completely uniform look.

Fortunately, it’s easy to hang your window treatments correctly, and we’re sharing the secrets on how to do it, with tips from our team of design specialists.

The Right Height & Width

We’ve seen so many homes with window treatment hardware installed just above the window frame. (Insert cringe here.) You want to follow the “high and wide” rule when hanging shades or drapes. The rod or roller should be at least six inches above the window frame and extend eight inches beyond either side. The added height will make your ceiling appear taller and your window look more prominent. The extra width is essential for drapery. You will frequently pull your drapes back during the day, and if the rod is too narrow, a portion of your view will be blocked by the stack back.

Fabulous Fabrics

Fabrics help set a room's mood and contribute to your window’s functionality. Hunter Douglas has a library of hundreds of fabrics in all styles. What About the Length?

Too-short drapes are seldom a good look. Unless you’re decorating with cafe-style curtains, you want to err on the side of longer drapery. A small puddle of drapery creates an elegant, romantic aesthetic and is a preferred style in more formal settings. If you’re concerned about your drapes causing trips and falls or becoming dirty, they should break less than an inch above the floor. They will still look fantastic but won’t be a safety hazard or become worn at the edges. Take accurate measurements by measuring from the top of the window trim to the floor. Add two inches to the number for a small puddle or reduce the number by one inch for drapes that break just above your floor.

Shades are usually mounted inside the window frame and require a different technique to achieve correct measurements. Measure the horizontal space inside the frame at the top, middle, and bottom for the most accurate measurement. If your numbers don’t match, use the largest figure. Determine the necessary length by measuring the vertical space inside the frame at the left, right, and center. There is no room for error when measuring for shades, as any mistake will be very prominent with an inside mount. Start with Samples
