Inside vs Outside Mount Blinds
If you're shopping for new blinds, consider whether you want an inside or outside mount. While this may sound like a small difference, these different mounting styles can have a big impact on how your window treatments look and perform at the end of the day. Many people are unfamiliar with the differences between the two; if you're among them, we're happy to share the details on inside vs outside mount blinds.
The Difference Between Inside and Outside Mount Blinds
The difference is straightforward. Inside-mounted blinds are installed within the window frame, and outside-mounted ones have hardware that extends beyond the edges of the frame. Choosing between the two is a matter of available space and personal preference.
Choosing an Inside Mount
We suggest inside-mount blinds when you want a clean, polished aesthetic. Mounting blinds inside the window frame is ideal for smaller rooms because the window treatments won't take up more space than is necessary. You can highlight beautiful woodwork or other unique architecture with inside mount blinds.
Measuring for Inside Mount Blinds
Precise measurements are crucial when purchasing custom window treatments, but accuracy is even more important for inside-mount blinds. Here's a breakdown of how to measure for inside mount blinds:
- You will need to measure the window's width, height, and depth.
- Measure across the window at the top, middle, and bottom, and use the smallest number for the width.
- Use the same process for height, except measure from top to bottom at the window's left, center, and right sides.
- The depth is the space between the window pane and the window's edge. It's important to ensure the depth of your window can accommodate the hardware of the blinds you choose.
- Measure at least twice to ensure you have the most accurate number.
- Always measure to the nearest 1/8th of an inch.
Outside Mount Blinds
Outside mount blinds are a good choice if you want to conceal window frames that are less than lovely or if you want your window treatments to take center stage in your room’s décor. Opting for outside mount blinds is also recommended to minimize unwanted light that sneaks in through the gaps at the sides of shades and blinds. An outside mount is also more forgiving if your measurements are not spot on. You can also create the illusion of more space and taller ceilings by mounting hardware just below the ceiling and several inches beyond each side of the window frame.
Pairing Inside and Outside Mount Blinds
Do you love the look of layered window treatments as much as we do? If you want to enjoy the textural beauty and enhanced functionality of drapery and blinds on the same window, you'll use inside and outside-mounted hardware. By mounting the drapes outside the frame, you'll ensure the fabric doesn't get caught on components of the blinds and experience maximum light control.
