Hypoallergenic Window Treatments
Did you know that your window treatments could make your allergies flare up? It’s true. Even in cool weather, when your windows aren’t open, dust and pet dander collect in your home, and window coverings are one of the places where this dust gathers the most. In fact, the air quality in your home can be much worse when it’s your windows stay closed often, your window treatments still and collecting dust. The designers at Rachel Brosky Interiors want to help you breathe easier, so we’re sharing the secrets of hypoallergenic window treatments.
Choose Materials Wisely
Drapery is luxe and elegant, but its surface and folds are a perfect spot for the dust to settle. Instead, opt for hard materials like wood, faux wood, or vinyl, because they are easier to keep clean. Their smooth surfaces wont hold onto dust as much as fabric materials will. Remember that the upkeep of horizontal blinds will be affected by the width of the slats and the amount of space between them. Typically, larger slats have the most distance between them, which makes them easier to clean. If you can, you could even try vertical blinds. The vertical slats offer less space for dust and other allergens to settle.
Roller and Roman shades are also relatively easy to care for since they are made using a single piece of fabric. Both shades can be gently dusted with a feather duster or vacuumed with a hose attachment on low suction. Natural fibers, like jute, bamboo, and grasses, are better for allergies than synthetic fibers, and woven wood shades are an effortless way to bring these materials into your home. Organic fibers release fewer chemicals and fumes than polyester and vinyl and are more eco-friendly. Consider hardwood or tile flooring where you can, as it’s much easier to clean than rugs or carpets. If you can’t bear cold feet that come along with hard floors, area rugs made using organic materials are better choices.
Go With the Flow
Of air, that is. When spring arrives, it’s tempting to open your windows for fresh air after being cooped up all winter, and this is a great idea for reducing dust on your window treatments. Allowing air to move throughout your home will help dislodge allergens that have settled into your fabrics and other flat surfaces but wait until later in the day to open windows because trees and other plants release pollen and spores first thing in the morning. Opening windows later in the day will help keep them from entering your home. Window blinds are our favorite window covering for optimal ventilation because you can tilt the slats to allow air to move without lifting the blinds completely.
